StowITnShowIT is the trading name of the sole trader business I started in 1999, after many years as a teacher. This included 15 years of working with computers in schools and involvement with staff training.

The business originally centred on the use of computers in the early days of digital photography, but in response to customer demand and as a result of personal skill development over the years, it now follows three courses:

Web Design

The business has more recently focussed on web design for small/medium businesses, offering many advanced features of web site operation - such as response forms, database functions and on-line trading - at very competitive rates. We specialise in matching business requirements to web site functions within a limited overall budget, while maintaining a high quality product. The service on offer is continually being improved.

Business Services

For small businesses without in-house computer expertise, we can offer advice and support regarding computer hardware, printers, internet connections, netwoking, software and basic procedures in computer usage. Our advice is impartially based on your requirements, as we do not sell equipment and therefore have no vested interest. We can source the most competitive prices for the equipment you need.

We operate telephone help or respond to call out when necessary to troubleshoot problems. Charging is cumulative on a quarterly or monthly account basis.

Help at Home

I have developed this aspect of the business in response to the continually growing demand from private individuals in the Thirsk area for computer help in their own homes. This service deals with:

• Computer purchase advice: I'll go with you to help you buy the computer you need, or help you purchase on-line. I'll set it up to run smoothly and spend a couple of hours showing you how to proceed.
• Email problems, virus removal and internet security, broadband connection, wireless routers.
• Windows problems and reloads, hardware and software installation.
• Single or multiple training sessions on topics to suit your needs: e.g. sending emails, using word processors or spreadsheets, digital photography.

Some jobs have a fixed charge, but work is normally charged by the quarter hour, with a usual minimum of half an hour. A charge may be made for travelling beyond the immediate Thirsk area (you will be told of this in advance).

Photographic

• Photography for web sites we are designing.
• Bulk scanning of prints, 35mm negatives or 35mm colour slides onto CD/DVD for archive/back up purposes or for slideshow display on computer or TV.
• Transfer from VHS (video) or camcorder tape to DVD (non copyright sources only).

Please note that we no longer offer the following services:

• photo repair - scratch removal etc
• photo printing
• transfer from 8mm cine film

Special Design Projects

We can produce electronic brochures and product catalogues to run interactively from a CD/DVD as well as in web format. The publications below are an example of what is possible.

Thirsk in the 21st Century

In 2000, Dave Titchmarsh produced an interactive CD ROM entitled 'Thirsk in the 21st Century'. This is a highly detailed study of Thirsk, with over 800 of his own photographs and 30,000 words of commentary. There is a 400 item index, fully interactive and about 5000 active links in total.

North York Moor Tour

(published 2004) An interactive tour of the North York Moors National Park on CD ROM for any PC running Windows 98 or later.

Around 1700 full screen photographs and 100,000 words, arranged in 80 chapters, with a full alphabetical index by place. Find a place with one or two clicks. Full screen slideshows. Hills and moors....rivers and valleys....sea and coast.... towns and villages....abbeys and castles....pubs and churches.
